ANCHOR VERSE: 1 Corinthians 12:28, “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments,” diversities of tongues.

The Ministry of Help is often misunderstood as work leaders are too important to do, therefore it is rarely appreciated Galatians 6:3, “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.” But without help no one would be able to effectively complete his or her mission. A man without help will be frustrated, tired and weary. Nothing great is ever accomplished without the help of others.

To understand the ministry of help, one must understand that God is the source of help. God’s help is given in many ways and He uses all creations to accomplish His will including His son, the Holy Spirit, the angels, human beings, even God can use animal to help you. If you are helping anyone in the church or helping the weak or needy, you are operating in the Ministry of Helps. It is a gift of God to the church.

Importance we attached to other Ministries or spiritual gifts should be attached to the Ministry of Helps.

WAYS GOD GAVE OUT HELP TO HIS PEOPLE

  1. God’s help for mankind is first seen in the creation of woman. When God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone He made a helper for him (a wife) Genesis 2:18, “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” After, He gave them command to be fruitful and multiply. He gave the woman the help she needed to carry and deliver children Genesis 4:1, “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.”
  2. When the human race needed renewal He gave Noah instructions on how to build the ark Genesis 6:4-16
  3. After He chose Abraham to be the father of faith Genesis 18:19. He gave him help to succeed Genesis 21:22, “And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:”
  4. When the Israelites needed help He sent Moses, Aaron and Miriam Micah 6:4, “For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.”
  5. God also helped the Israelites to enter the promised land Deuteronomy 11:29, “And it shall come to pass, when the LORD thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal.”
  6. It was God that helped Moses to lead the Israelites successfully Exodus 18:4, “And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:”

EXAMPLES OF HELPS MINISTRY IN THE BIBLE

  1. Eve was created to be an helper for Adam Genesis 2:18.
  2. Helpers for Moses: Moses’ father-in-law Jethro advised Moses to appoint some leaders to serve as helpers for him in judging Israelites in order not to wear him out Exodus 18:17-20. God commanded Moses to appoint seventy elders to be helpers for him Numbers 11:10-25.
  3. Joshua was Moses’ Minister of Helps: Joshua was called a Minister of Helps to Moses. His service to Moses developed him for eventual leadership role over the children of Israel that he attained after Moses’ death Exodus 24:13, “And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God.”
  4. Elisha, Minister of Helps to Elijah. Elisha was a Helps Minister serving Elijah. He was a successful farmer when he was called 1Kings 19:16-19. Elisha left all he had and went with Elijah, to serve the man of God.

As an individual there are some essential helpers you need in your life

  1. The Holy Ghost. The help of Holy Spirit is the most important help of your life. If you have it, you will not lack human helpers. The Bible calls the Holy Spirit our helper John 14:18, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”
  2. A partner (or Spouse). The person you get married to is one of God’s major help for your life (after the Holy Spirit). Do not just marry for societal status. God makes your partner to be an help suitable for you. Genesis 2:18.
  3. Helpers of the war, 1 Chronicle 12:1-2, “1Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war. 2They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of Benjamin.” When these people came to David, they didn’t look like helpers but like problems (broken, battered and discontented), but they later became David’s mighty men. 1 Samuel 22:2, “And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.”

The Ministry of Helps is an extension of the father’s Ministry to us. He is the source of help. The Holy Spirit lives in believers and gives us with the abilities to help the universal body. Every spiritual gifts is a gift of help which include prophecy, pastoring, teaching, miracles and healing etc. because they help the body of Christ 1Corinthians 12:28, “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.” God instituted the Helps Ministry to free the other Ministry gifts to function in the calling that they have on their lives.
