“And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.”Exodus 4:2

Beloved, whenever God wants to use a man, He does not start with what the man lacks. He begins with what the man already has. When God called Moses, Moses gave excuses: “I cannot speak. I am slow of tongue. They will not believe me.” But the Lord asked him a simple question: “What is in your hand?”

Moses looked and saw only a rod — an ordinary stick, dry and common. But in the hand of God, that rod became an instrument of wonders.

Today, I came to declare to you: God will use what you already have in your hand to make you a wonder!

  1. No one is qualified by themselves: Moses felt unqualified for the task. He said: “And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.”Exodus. Moses thought his weakness disqualified him. But God reminded him: “I made the mouth. I will be with your mouth.” So hear me: it is not your ability; it is God’s ability working through you. You may feel unqualified, but God Himself will qualify you.
  2. What you have in your hand is enough: Moses had nothing but a rod. Yet when God touched it, miracles happened. “And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand.”Exodus 4:3–4. That same rod divided the Red Sea: “But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.”Exodus 14:16. That same rod brought water from the rock: “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”Exodus 17:6. So the rod in Moses’ hand — a dry, ordinary stick — became the instrument of signs and wonders. I declare: that little thing in your hand will bring testimonies in Jesus’ name!
  3. You are created a wonder: From the beginning, God made man a wonder. Genesis 1:26 says: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”Genesis 1:26 And in Psalm 8:4–6, David exclaimed: “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet.”Psalm 8:4–6  Tell your neighbor: “I am a wonder!” Say it to yourself: “I am a wonder!”
  4. Practical illustrations: God specializes in using what looks small. The widow in 2 Kings 4 had nothing but a little oil. The prophet said, “Borrow vessels, not a few.” That little oil filled many jars, paid her debts, and sustained her family. The boy in John 6 had only five loaves and two fishes. “And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.”John 6:11 That little boy’s lunch fed more than five thousand people, with twelve baskets left over. Never despise what you have. In God’s hands, your small becomes mighty!
  5. Prophetic application: Paul said: “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”2 Corinthians 4:7 This means the greatness is not in us but in God working through us. Declare with me: What I have in my hand will make me a wonder in the name of Jesus. My little will multiply. My testimony will make men marvel.
  6. Modern-day illustration: Let me share a story. A dog once fell into a deep pit. People gathered around and, instead of helping, they began to throw dirt into the pit to bury it alive. But each time the dirt fell on the dog, it shook it off and stepped on it. The more dirt was thrown, the higher the dog rose, until it finally stepped out of the pit alive. Beloved, what the enemy means to bury you with, God will turn into your stepping stone. Shake it off! Step on it! And rise out of that pit in Jesus’ name!

The rod in Moses’ hand was ordinary until God touched it. Your certificate, your business, your skill, your voice, your faith — may look small today, but when God touches it, the world will see you and declare: Indeed, you are a wonder.”

 Prayer:

  1. Lord, use what I have in my hand to make me a testimony and a wonder in my generation.
  2. Father, let the little in my hand multiply and become more than enough, in the name of Jesus.
  3. O Lord, crown my efforts with glory and honour, and let my life showcase Your wonders in Jesus’ name.
